It was all hands on deck at Blue Reef Aquarium on Tuesday, when a love-struck chef enlisted the help of a diver to pop the question to his unsuspecting partner.
Gareth Attwell, from Hythe, asked staff at the Hastings attraction to help plan the surprise marriage proposal to partner Rose Cable.
Romantic chef Gareth asked Blue Reef Diver Patrick Shier to lead the fishy goings on from inside the aquarium’s giant tropical ocean display unveiling a sign which read: ‘There are 100s of fish in the sea, but you’re the one for me. Rose I love you will you marry me?’
Gareth, 34, chose the unusual location because Rose, 31, who is also a chef in Hythe, loves marine life and has a number of fish tanks at home.
Blue Reef Aquarium’s Leanna Lawson, who helped Gareth organise the whole event, said she was incredibly relieved it all went to plan.
“He had come in earlier in the week to discuss the details of the proposal and to make sure everything was ready for the big day.
“We managed to get everyone where they needed to be at the right time and Patrick did a great job of revealing the proposal while the couple were in the underwater tunnel.
“Rose had absolutely no idea what was going on and said she was ‘stunned’ when she realised as she thought the diver was there to feed the fish.
“She said yes immediately and all the visitors were congratulating them.
“It was a wonderful moment and everyone who witnessed it felt quite emotional. We would all like to offer our own congratulations and wish them all the best for the future,” she added.
Proving they really are sole mates, Gareth gushed: “Rose and I are massively in love with each other and I never thought I would meet someone as amazing as her.”
The couple, who are hoping to get married in Las Vegas, were given two Blue Reef annual passes so they can come and relive their special moment anytime of the year.
The proposal created a buzz on Twitter with Old Town pub Ye Olde Pump House tweeting: ‘She obviously didn’t sea it coming!’
