Romantic boyfriend Robert Watson enlisted the help of aquarists at Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium to propose to his girlfriend this week.
Robert, 30, secretly arranged for a sign to be suspended in the aquarium’s giant tropical ocean tank asking girlfriend Tracey Fellows, 26, to marry him.
The surprise proposal required plenty of planning and perfect timing as Robert, from Grendon in Warwickshire, had to get Tracey to just the right section of the display before going down on one knee.
The couple, who have been together for seven years and have a 16-month-old son called Anthony, met while they were working at a local council. Robert is an environmental health officer and Tracey worked as a grants officer.
Robert chose the aquarium to propose as he wanted to do something a bit different and novel and also find somewhere where Anthony would be entertained as well!
“As he loves fish and we are down on holiday I was looking at potential locations in the area and immediately thought of the aquarium,” said Robert.
“Tracey reacted with disbelief that the proposal was actually for her initially but was completely taken aback and surprised by it.
“She had no idea and said I had hidden it really well. She cried quite a bit and said ‘yes’ so that’s got to be a good sign!
“The whole thing went completely to plan and I wouldn’t have changed anything, we had a fantastic day. Tracey and I want to say a very big thank you to everyone at Blue Reef for making it so special for us,” he added.
For staff at the aquarium it was quite a responsibility to ensure everything went smoothly.
Blue Reef’s Jenni Smith said: “The whole thing was really quite nerve racking, to be honest I think we were more anxious than Robert!
“We managed to get Tracey to the right spot without suspecting a thing and it was such a romantic gesture that we were all quite emotional when he actually popped the question.
“Although it was quite a responsibility we were all delighted to have been involved in such a romantic gesture and we wish Robert, Tracey and Anthony all the very best for the future,” she added.
