TV star Phillip Schofield will be in Newquay on Friday, November 22nd at 10.30am to unveil an historic theatre plaque at the Blue Reef Aquarium.

The ITV’s This Morning presenter has agreed to officially unveil the new plaque to commemorate the Cosy Nook Theatre, which stood on the site of the aquarium.

The unveiling will coincide with the release of a new book about the Cosy Nook called ‘The Theatre by the Sea’ written by local author Chris Blount.

Built in 1929, the theatre was a familiar landmark in the town before being demolished back in 1991.

Mr Schofield, who grew up in the resort, was among the last stars to appear at the theatre.

He will reveal the new plaque which is located in the aquarium’s main reception area and features a vintage photograph of packed theatre, before joining Chris Blount for a book-signing session in The Bookshop on East Street.

Blue Reef’s Steve Matchett said: “We’re delighted that Phillip has agreed to come along and unveil the plaque. It’s particularly appropriate as he also appeared on stage at the theatre.

“The Cosy Nook played a key role in the town’s history and was a very popular venue which was visited by tens of thousands of people during its lifetime.

“The plaque will be a fitting tribute and will hopefully remind future visitors to the aquarium about the theatrical heritage of the site,” he said.

Following the unveiling it is hoped Mr Schofield will join the other guests on a guided tour of the aquarium.

The Cosy Nook boasted 388 seats in its heyday, with every seat taken for its evening performances.

Onlookers would watch fascinated as six coaches eased their way down towards the promenade and squeezed into a parking space to deliver excited audiences.

Among the stars who performed there were Benny Hill, Clive Dunn, Ray Allan and magicians David Nixon and Paul Daniels.
