VISITORS INVITED TO GET THEIR TEETH IN TO SHARKS’ WORLD

Visitors to Portsmouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium will have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of sharks and rays over the May Half Term Holidays (Saturday, May 28th – Sunday, June 5th).
‘Shark Week’ is a celebration of the ocean’s ultimate predators and will feature everything from prehistoric super sharks like megalodon to shark and ray feeds, as well as conservation talks and workshops.
On Monday and Tuesday the Southsea attraction will be playing host to new UK-based shark conservation charity Fin Fighters.
The organisation is on a mission to protect sharks worldwide and end the sale and distribution of shark fins in the UK by 2023.
Palaeontologist Neil Morris, who specialises in prehistoric shark species, will also be at the aquarium on these dates. He will be giving a series of fun and informative talks about extinct species and will be bringing in an array of fossilised sharks’ teeth.
Visitors can help feed native sharks and rays on selected dates*, enjoy hands-on workshops with shark teeth skin and jaws, learn about their evolution and find out about the dangers they face in the wild and what we can all do to help protect them. (*additional charges apply with all proceeds going to the Fin Fighter charity and Shark Trust.)
There will also be the chance to dig up your own fossils on the ‘Dino-dig’ (Monday and Tuesday only), enjoy quizzes, competitions and special shark talks every day.
Blue Reef’s Jenna MacFarlane said: “Sharks are always one of the first things visitors want to see when they come to the aquarium.
“We have more than a dozen different shark and ray species on display here including a number of shark and ray eggs on display in our nursery tanks.
“This event will also provide visitors of all ages with a real insight into these fascinating fish and their truly extraordinary history.
“From ancient shark fossils to having the chance to actually help feed real ones there really is something for everyone to enjoy,” she added.
*Ray feeds will take place on Saturday, May 28th, Monday, May 30th, Wednesday, June 1st, Friday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 5th. Shark feeds will take place Sunday, May 29th, Tuesday, May 31st, Thursday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 4th.
