FUN SCIENCE LESSONS ON OFFER AT AQUARIUM
Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium is inviting younger visitors to become honorary aquarists for the day as part of a week-long science-based event.
British Science Week (BSW) is a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths – featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages. BSW provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths professionals, science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in STEM events and activities.
As well as trying to work out how much water the aquarium contains in total, youngsters will be able to find out how the giant filtration system is operated and the types of water tests which need to be done to ensure everything is healthy.
Visitors will also be able to take part in literal hands-on experiments to discover how effective seal blubber is at insulating their bodies from the cold and their will also be science-based quizzes and an environmental mix and match workshop.
Blue Reef’s Caitlin Shields said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get kids interested and involved in science in a fun and entertaining way.
“Our experiments and activities are designed to use actual scientific theory in a practical way so people can see how important it actually is in the everyday world.
“Hopefully it will inspire some more young people to get involved in the sciences,” she added.
Throughout the week there will be 10 daily talks, feeds, demonstrations, workshops and other activities taking place including seal and otter feeds as well as rockpool encounters and monkey feeds.
Issued on behalf of Blue Reef. For more information please contact Rosie Wiggin or Caitlin Shields on 0191 258 1031.
