Celebrate World Ocean’s Day!

Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium is celebrating World Oceans Day on Sunday, June 8th with a series of events and activities.

WOD is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of the marine environment.

The concept for a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and it has been unofficially celebrated every year since then.

As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is now officially recognised by the UN as an annual event.

On World Oceans Day itself visitors to the aquarium will be able to find out more about marine conservation projects as well as the impact of pollution on our seas through a series of talks and demonstrations.

Younger visitors will be able to get glitter tattoos and take part in colouring competitions and the aquarium’s talks and feeding programmes will all have a conservation theme.

There will be displays by the UK-based conservation charities the Shark Trust and the Marine Conservation Society along with lots of other information from groups and organisations dedicated to improving the marine environment.

Blue Reef’s Anna Etchells said: “Our zoological team are all committed to supporting marine conservation projects both around the world and here in the UK and this is an opportunity for visitors to find out more about what we can all do to help.

“Whether it’s joining in with one of the regular beach cleans organised by our own volunteers or getting involved in charities like the Marine Conservation Society we can all get involved either locally or worldwide,” she added.
