Get your teeth into Shark Week!

Visitors to Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium will have the chance to immerse themselves in world of sharks and rays over the May Half Term Holidays (Monday, May 26th – Sunday, June 1st).

‘Shark Week’ is a celebration of the ocean’s ultimate predators and will feature everything from sharks workshops to shark and ray feeds as well as conservation info and the chance to discover sharks in UK waters.

As well as coming face to face with living members of the shark and ray family ranging from native dogfish and horn sharks to stingrays, bamboo catsharks and black tip reef sharks, visitors to the aquarium will also be able to visit the ‘Shark Nursery’ – home to dozens of baby sharks.

Blue Reef’s Anna Etchells said: “Shark Week is always one of the most popular events here at the aquarium.

“People are genuinely fascinated by these amazing creatures which have existed relatively unchanged since before the time of the dinosaurs.

“This event gives us the chance to showcase the sheer variety and diversity of shark and ray species and highlight their positive characteristics, rather than just their negative ones,” she added.

Sharks first appeared in our seas 350 million years ago – that’s 100 million years before the dinosaurs. Today there are over 350 different species from the 18cm spined pygmy shark to the 18-metre whale shark.

British waters are visited by around 30 different species – including the world’s second largest, the basking shark, which can grow to 12 metres.
