Close your eyes and picture a shark, a ray and a seal in their natural habitat. You’re probably thinking somewhere pretty exotic. Or very cold. Or far, far away.
Now picture your doorstep. Because in fact, that’s where you can find all three! Amazingly, they all live off the North East coast, just a few miles from us here at Blue Reef Tynemouth. Basking sharks, orcas and even bottlenose dolphins and more have all been spotted in the North Sea. However, if you don’t happen to have a seaworthy vessel handy, you’re in luck. This half term we’re delving deeper into our native species and helping your own little creatures get close to some new finned friends right here in our aquarium.
From 25th May to 2nd June 2019, you’ll be able to meet the local wildlife at our North Sea Heroes event. And when we say wild, we mean it! See sharks swim around you, smile back at our rays, and discover all about the other fishy families living off our coast, before getting to meet them. After all, the more we know about these amazing animals, the better we can help protect their local habitat.
You can also find out more about our Marine Rescue Centre. It’s a purpose-built rescue facility that provides much-needed care to sick, injured and abandoned seal pups and other marine life. Over the past 10 years, we’ve rescued and rehabilitated more than 200 seal pups. Which makes it all the more important to teach the next generation about how vital it is to care for our environment. Plus of course, in Blue Reef Tynemouth, you can meet a few of our resident seals who’ll be more than happy to say hello! We can’t promise a seal with a kiss. But we can offer a big, wet wave!
Our aquarium has plenty to explore, excite and entertain, with loads of opportunities to spot who could be lurking in local waters. But during our half term event from 25th May – 2nd June 2019, we’ll go one step further. Our expert aquarium team will also be sharing what to look for in a rockpool and which kinds of marine life can be found off our coast, so you can have your own adventures outside our aquarium too.
