GIANT GOURAMIS MOVE TO STAR IN PORTSMOUTH

Giant Gourami Pinky and Peanut
Two of Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium residents have been transferred to their sister aquarium in Portsmouth so that they can benefit from an even bigger home and be the stars of the new Monsoon Falls display.
Visitor favourites Pinky (female) and Peanut (male) have been at the Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay for over 6 years.
The two giant gouramis had previously been rescued by the aquarium when they outgrew their former home with a member of the public.
Although their current home at the Newquay aquarium was of an adequate size, Portsmouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium have invested in a brand new large flooded forest zone, highlighting Asian regions and the giant gouramis will be the star attraction.
Lara Heaney displays supervisor at Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium said “The move will be a great thing for the fish as their new tank is even more spacious than the one they had here and they can now be enjoyed by Portsmouth’s visitors. We will miss them, as they are real characters and we have asked the Portsmouth aquarists to make sure they still get spoiled with their favourite treats of bananas and apples”.
Giant gourami Osphronemus goramy are a freshwater species native to Southeast Asia, usually found in slow moving areas such as swamps, lakes and large rivers. They can grow up to a common length of 45cm although there are records of giant gourami measuring up to 70cm in length.
