Meet the Curled Octopus
If you’ve paid us a visit over the last couples weeks, you will have spotted our fantastic five curled octopuses. These cephalopods are renowned for their unique appearance and intriguing behaviours. It’s a good idea to make sure you walk around the aquarium more than once, so you can see them in all of their glory.
Curled octopuses are native to the coastal waters of the North Atlantic, including the shores of the United Kingdom! Their natural habitat extends from rocky areas to sandy bottoms, where they find shelter and camouflage themselves among the ocean floor.
Masters of Disguise
One of the most fascinating aspects of curled octopuses is their ability to change colours and textures. They can transform their skin to match the surroundings, effectively camouflaging themselves from predators and prey alike. Witnessing their instant colour changes is like watching a living work of art! If you watch our Octopuses for a while, you may be able to spot this yourself!
Curled Octopus Intelligence
Octopuses, in general, are incredibly intelligent creatures, and the curled octopus is no exception. They have been observed using tools, solving puzzles, and even escaping from their enclosures! Their problem-solving skills and curious nature make them one of the most intelligent invertebrates on the planet.
Did you know that curled octopuses have three hearts? One heart pumps blood to their body, while the other two hearts circulate blood.
They are also excellent hunters, using their powerful beaks to catch prey such as crabs and small fish.
