santaNewquay’s Bue Reef Aquarium will be literally overrun with Father Christmases this weekend when it plays host to the annual Santa Beach Run.
Taking place on Saturday, December 20th, the run is expected to attract hundreds of participants – all dressed as Santa – to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care.
The aquarium, which overlooks Towan Beach, will act as the registration point for the event and competitors will also be able to take part in a warm up there prior to setting off on their Christmas challenge.
All entrants can run, jog or walk the one and two mile routes and will receive a special Christmas medal for finishing, along with a free mince pie.
Blue Reef Aquarium’s Steve Matchett said: “It will be quite a sight to see hundreds of Santa Claus lining up at the start line and a great way for everyone to properly get in to the Christmas spirit.
“We’re hoping for fine weather and a record turnout this year and we are delighted to be able to get involved with such a fantastic cause that provides an invaluable service for the whole of Cornwall,” he added.
Cornwall Hospice Care provides special care free of charge, to patients with life limiting illnesses aged 18 and over at two Cornwall based hospices – Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle.
The nursing teams care for people with a range of illnesses from cancer to heart and lung disease and motor neurone disease.
It costs £8.4 million annually to run the charity and with a very small grant from the NHS it means a massive £7.5 million has to be raised every year.
• The Beach Santa Run starts at 9.30am on Saturday, December 20th at the Blue Reef Aquarium, Towan Promenade, Newquay. Spectators are welcome. For more details and to find out more about Cornwall Hospice Care visit .
